We’re in Hawaii!!

by Papa K on December 19, 2010

On Saturday we left rainy San Francisco and arrived in … rainy Hawaii! But at least it is warm here (and the rain should go away in a couple days). We’re visiting Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal for our annual Christmas pilgrimage and couldn’t be happier to spend some time with family and get some much needed R&R (and we mean it – Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal keep Maile hours, so in theory we should get some extra hours of sleep!)

More to come as our trip develops, but here is how we kicked things off…

Very happy to be here with Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal!

Apparently Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal are a little out of practice with the "look at the camera, not the baby" rules - luckily we have a couple weeks to figure it out...

Sliding

by Papa K on December 16, 2010

My favorite part of this video is how Maile pauses at the top of the slide, thinks about it, takes a deep breath and then plunges down. So brave!

Hey you, come over here for a second, I want to show you something. I think there is a little girl that kind of looks like me following me around...

See there she is. She likes to play games too - just copying everything I do. Super annoying.

Seriously. You need to stop this.

Okay fine, we can be friends. Nice jacket by the way. Adorable.

On Sunday we finally broke down and took Maile to get her first haircut. We loved the way her hair was, but the bangs were always getting in her eyes and we felt it was time to do something about it. Instead of going to one of those kid places we just brought her up to see Gary, the guy who normally cuts my (and most of my friends’) hair.

It will be okay, Maile Girl, I promise...

And, of course, we got every snip and clip on video:

And drum roll please… here is what Maile looks like now:

We actually think her new do makes Maile look a little different – maybe a little more Asian? And don’t worry, the curls are still all there in the back, other than removing a few split ends, we kept those fully in tact!

Thanks Gary!

Baker Maile

by Maile Girl on December 13, 2010

Guess what I did yesterday? I baked bread! Challah to be exact. What’s challah? It’s just Jewish for bread. Delicious bread that is. Especially when it’s baked by me!

How did I know how to bake? I wish I could tell you that I just came up with the recipes all by myself, but that just wouldn’t be true. Megan helped me out every step of the way. Baking is pretty awesome though. You get to make a huge mess and no one yells at you.

Say that again? You want me to dump the flour on the floor? Does Mommy know you are teaching me how to do this?

Just like this?

Just like this?

I mean I'm having fun, but I feel a little guilty. I'm making such a mess. (It's okay Maile Girl, it's okay...)

Ta da!

Ta da!

You know what the best part of baking is? The EATING!

(Dad note: I know I’m pretty biased, but the challah was delicious. We had challah french toast all weekend. According to Megan, Maile had a blast with the baking – we can’t wait to see what they make next!)

Maile Minute – 17 Months

by Papa K on December 12, 2010

Last month we started a series of posts where we film Maile for one minute and just see what she does. We created a category so you can see all the previous posts here.

We increased the degree of difficulty this month by taking her out of her high chair for the filming. I also cheated a bit by using the front-facing camera on the iPhone so she could see herself.

All in all, 17 months has been a good milestone for Maile Girl (although to be fair, they are all good milestones). We definitely experienced a bit of a regression sleep-wise over the past couple months, but now she seems to have figured all of that out and is sleeping much better. She is no longer in the crib, probably for good at this point, so there is still a chance she’ll waddle out of her room in the middle of the night to say hello, but for the most part even if she does that she goes right back down.

One fun development is her capacity to enjoy projects – Megan has been great doing all sorts of fun art projects with Maile over the past few weeks. It feels like every day we come home and there is something new to see. Our apartment looks like a Maile and Hannah museum right now.

Speaking of Hannah, its fun to watch Maile interact with Hannah and also other kids. When we went over Harold’s house for Hannukah she followed him all over the place. In the past she would play alongside other kids, but not really interact. Now more and more interactions are taking place – and for the most part, they are hilarious!

Can’t wait to see what happens next!

An Early Christmas

by Papa K on December 9, 2010

Since we will be in Hawaii for Christmas, Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal sent their big present to the house a little bit early. It came in 3 big boxes, so after Maile Girl went to sleep last night, Mommy Elf and Daddy Elf set to work. Our first late night construction project – and it went smoothly!

Then we set everything up for a morning tea party and went to sleep. Maile Girl actually slept through the night (for a change!) and in the morning we had a big surprise for her…

(Dad note: Sorry so blurry, I think it was due to the lighting…)

Maile played on her new table and chairs all morning – she loves it! Thank you Grandma Gail and Grandpa Cal!

Yes, Mr. Teddy, the tea wil be ready soon, we just need to let it cool down a bit...

Before Maile was even born, Harold’s parents gave us a present and told us we couldn’t open it until Hanukkah. The present ended up being a pretty funny book called The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming – A Christmas Story by Lemony Snicket. Maile was too young last year to really enjoy the book, but this year we started reading the book with her and pretty quickly she started participating. What do I mean by participating?

If it’s not clear from the video. Basically, ever few pages in the book there is a picture of a latke screaming “AAAHHHHHHHHHHH!” – whenever Maile sees the latke, she screams, and mommy and daddy crack up!

When Maile was born, Grandpa Mike and Grandma Jill put dibs on the opportunity to send Maile her first bike (I have a feeling they’ll be handling bikes #2-5 as well…) Having pretty much mastered the whole walking thing, we thought Hanukkah would be a perfect time to get Maile some wheels.

Unfortunately, Grandma Jill and Grandpa Mike couldn’t be here in person, so we decided to film the big reveal for them. I think it’s safe to say that Maile LOVES her new bike!

Thank you Grandma Jill and Grandpa Mike!

Working down the check list…

by Papa K on December 6, 2010

You know how every parent has embarrassing photos of their child taking a bath with a member of the opposite sex? Well, after a Hanukkah party with Harold, we can cross that one off the to do list.

Umm... Daddy are you aware that there is a boy in the bath tub with me?

This. Is. So. Much. Fun. Can we have bath time with Harold every night?
