About

Welcome to Maile Chieko’s blog – Hapa Haole. Maile was born on July 11th, 2009 to Matt and Christine.

The goal of this blog is threefold:

  1. Keep our family and friends up-to-date with all of Maile’s adventures
  2. Provide an opportunity for mom and dad to reflect on lessons learned along the way and share tips and tricks
  3. Allow dad to play around with new web and blog technologies – e.g., to “geek out” a bit

You can visit us at any time or click the “Get updates via email” or “Get updates via RSS” links and will send you the latest posts as they become available.

The name of this blog, Hapa Haole, was originally used for our wedding blog. “Hapa Haole” is the Hawaiian phrase for “mixed” (or more technically, “part Caucasian/white”). At the time of our wedding, we said we chose the name because “as we’ve started planning our wedding, we’ve realized that we truly are mixing our cultures, our background, our families…” Now it has a more specific meaning as Maile will grow up “hapa” – and we truly believe she represents the best of Christine and I and our cultures and families!

Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention some great inspiration for this blog – Christine’s brother Steve has kept an amazing blog for his two girls, Katie and Emily. He’s working on 4 years now and its just an incredible archive of the lives of Maile’s two amazing cousins.
