Meanwhile on the homefront…

by Papa K on April 21, 2014

We’ll return to the China adventures tomorrow – still a couple more days to cover – but wanted to check in with our little Lauren holding down the fort in SF with Grandma Gail and Papa Cal. We missed Lauren immensely, but the daily videos and pictures from Grandma and Papa helped. And while we are sure Lauren missed us too, it looks like she had a blast with Grandma and Papa!

(Thank you Grandma and Papa for watching our little girl!)

Missing Katie and Emily

by Maile Girl on January 3, 2014

Maile Girl here – aloha from Hawaii! We’re still visiting with Grandma and Papa, but I’m very sad to report that Katie and Emily already went home to Japan. I miss them so much already! I had so much fun playing with them – check out all the fun things we did…

First things first, I showed them my new baby Lauren - they hadn't met her before - they hit it right off with her. I knew they would!

We attempted many times to take pictures all in the same purple dresses that Grandma got us - they didn't all work out, but we still had fun trying...

Grandma and Papa taught us Pokeeno - which is kind of like Bingo. None of liked losing, so that made things interesting.

Mommy and Daddy went away this weekend and left Lauren and I home. Don’t worry Grandma Gail and Papa Cal came to stay with us! On Friday, I told Papa that we needed to send Mommy and Daddy pictures throughout the weekend so that they knew we were doing okay. And that’s exactly what he did!

On Friday night we went to Off the Grid and it was Onigri time for me!

At the park, I showed Papa how to feed Lauren. (Dad note: Mommy and I really liked how Maile opened her mouth to show Lauren how it's done.)

On Monday, we set out for Maile’s first true Hawaiian Adventure. We made a full day of it – first we did a kayak adventure to the Hidden Valley Falls and then in the evening we took Maile to her first Luau.

Maile did amazing the whole day – she was definitely the right age for both adventures. The kayak was great – Mommy, Daddy and Maile shared one kayak. Maile sat upfront and actually had her own paddle, although she only used it sparingly. We probably paddled for 45 minutes to an hour. Then we did a short hike through the jungle to the waterfall (which was pretty small, but still fun for Maile to discover it). We ate lunch and then went to a swimming hole with a rope swing (which Daddy enjoyed immensely!). Then we hiked back out and they gave us a boat ride back. Perfect amount of time and Maile was a trooper for almost the whole trip (I gave her a shoulder ride right towards the end for a little bit).

As any fan of Dora knows, you need a good map to go on an adventure...

That night we went to our first luau. Again, Maile was a great age – she soaked in everything. I’ve never seen her clap so excitedly and happily for something. And she LOVED showing off her hula skills (hat tip to Mommy for teaching her some moves).

(NOTE: We went to the Luau Kalamaku which was right near Grandma and Papa’s house. This was actually my first luau too, so nothing to compare it to, but we had a blast and I’d definitely recommend it.)

Our luau experience began of course by getting lei'd

Easter Family Pictures

by Papa K on March 31, 2013

We had a fun Easter Weekend with Grandma and Papa in town visiting. Even though it rained later in the day, Sunday started out beautiful and we were able to take some family pictures before we headed out to brunch.

Just chatting with Grandma Gail

by Papa K on February 13, 2013

Maile Girl has been home from school sick the past couple of days. A bit of a cough and fever – we actually don’t think it’s the flu luckily, but still poor girl hasn’t been feeling well. She has her moments where she just is lethargic on the couch, but other times, you’d think she was pulling a Ferris Bueller on us. For example, yesterday morning she decided to call up Grandma Gail and have a chat…

A Special Day

by Papa K on January 21, 2013

Today was a special day. Yes, it was Inauguration Day and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday – but on a more personal note, it was the first time in quite some time that both sets of grandparents were together with us. With one set of grandparents in Hawaii, the other set in Boston and us in San Francisco, it is not too often we all get together. We like to space things out so one set will visit during one of Maile’s holidays from school and the other set will visit during another, etc. Today was the one day they were overlapping for this visit – with Grandma and Papa Boston heading home tomorrow and Grandma and Papa Hawaii arriving to help out for another couple weeks as I head back to work.

Maile was in heaven with all the attention! And Lauren had plenty of welcoming arms to cradle and hold her throughout the day. The weather cooperated as well, so we snuck outside to take some pictures of the whole family together…

Can’t thank both sets of grandparents enough for all the love and support they’ve provided as we’ve settled in with Lauren!

When Grandma Gail and Papa Cal were originally planning to leave on Sunday, we thought we’d be saying good-bye like this:

Grandma Gail, Papa Cal and Maile (3.5)

Instead, we said good-bye on Wednesday like this:

Grandma Gail, Papa Cal, Maile (3.5) and Lauren (4 days)

We can’t thank Grandma and Papa enough for changing around their flights and helping us settle in these few days. We will certainly never forget our Christmas and New Year’s vacation to Disneyland and the very special gift we received at the start of 2013!

On our second day at Disneyland, we got down to business and met some princesses! We actually spent the day at the California Adventure side of the park and started our day at Ariel’s Grotto where we had breakfast alongside “real” Disney princesses. Maile and her cousins were blown away that they actually got to meet the princesses. (With the exception of Minnie – Maile Girl still isn’t a fan of the non-human characters 🙂

First up, Maile and her cousins met the hostess, Princess Ariel:

And then it was just an ongoing stream of princesses while we ate breakfast (Belle, Cinderella, Princess Minnie and Aurora)…

Maile Girl here. GUESS WHAT?! Katie and Emily are here! Yes, in San Francisco! At my house! I showed them my room and my toys and we colored and played games and slurped noodles and ran around and cuddled and read books – and that was all in just the first couple of hours! We are already having so much fun and we haven’t even gotten to Disneyland yet! (Dad note: we are all headed there after Christmas.)

Sorry, Daddy, I guess I ruined the picture, but I just can't believe my eyes!

Katie and Emily speak mostly Japanese, but Candyland is a universal language apparently because we were able to play just fine!

(Dad note: Christine and I have been playing A LOT of Candyland since Maile got it for Hanukkah so we are very happy to add some new players into the mix.)

Can you guess which one is my lunch and which one is Katie and Emily's?
