Tool Time with Maile Girl

by Papa K on August 18, 2011

I’m not a particularly handy man, Chris definitely has more of those genes in her. Luckily, Maile seems to be taking after her mother. This week she’s been fascinated with the tool set we got her for her birthday and has been working on how the screws work. She gets frustrated sometimes, but cool to see that she works through it and finally figures it out. This video also gives a good example of what it’s like to follow along with a “Maile story” these days – actually getting easier and easier to figure out what she is talking about!

Syrup!

by Maile Girl on August 14, 2011

Oh, syrup – where have you been all my life? Up until this point if you asked me what my favorite foods were, I’d probably say bananas or maybe even broccoli. Not any more. Syrup rules!

Syrup - so good when it hits your lips!

On Saturday morning, Mommy left the room and I noticed that her toast didn’t have any syrup on it. Luckily, Mommy had left the syrup bottle on the table. So I helped her out.

(Dad note: do we have a Buddy Elf on our hands?)

New Shoes for a Rainy Day

by Maile Girl on August 9, 2011

Grandma Jill heard that San Francisco summers can be cold and rainy so she sent a new pair of shoes that are made specifically to go jumping in puddles. I love jumping in puddles! There weren’t any puddles in the house when I tried them on, but I practiced anyways. I think I’m going to get good use of these…

Thanks Grandma Jill!

Big Day Tomorrow

by Maile Girl on August 7, 2011

I have a big day tomorrow. It’s my first day of preschool. I’m very excited.

I’m not quite sure what to expect. Mommy and daddy say it is going to be lots of fun and I’m going to make a lot of new friends. Given all of this, I wanted to make sure I look my best. I know whenever Mommy dresses up fancy for a date with daddy or a meeting at work, she does this thing that she calls “curling her eyelashes”. I’ve watched her do it about a thousand times – so I decided to do it today in preparation for my big day tomorrow.

Mommy said I did a great job and my eyelashes look fabulous!

When we came home from work the other day, Maile and Hannah treated us to a showing of the bunny song and related dance.

In case you have trouble following, the bunnies go to sleep and then they wake up and hop. Hard to believe something so simple could be so cute!

On Saturday, I packed up my tools and headed over to Daddy’s new office to help him set it up. There were lots of desks and couches and chairs to build, but with my help (and especially Mommy’s) Daddy and his partners were able to set everything up. According to this video, it only took “1 minute”, but I could have sworn we were there longer…

The best part of the office? That’s easy. The tunnel, of course. What? Your daddy’s office doesn’t have a tunnel?

The tunnel was really long. I got lost a few times.

Hey! Who turned out the lights?

The tunnel was even big enough for Daddy to fit in!

(Dad note: Thanks to Maile Girl and Mommy for helping with the construction! My partner, Nate, did the time capture video above. Really cool setup – the camera basically follows a track and takes a picture every 5 seconds. Incredibly, Maile didn’t notice the huge dolly setup in the corner and didn’t bother it once!)

Bubble Pipe

by Papa K on July 27, 2011

All I can think of with this video is that this bubble pipe is the new version of that cigarette gum they used to sell when we were kids (I assume they don’t sell that anymore, right?) It’s a gateway toy!

Maile Tzeitel

by Papa K on July 25, 2011

Little known fact about Daddy (that won’t surprise anyone who really knows me) – I’ve never seen Fiddler on the Roof. Therefore, when we received a “Sunrise, Sunset” book from The PJ Library, I just thought it was another cute book about the sun. It was left to my Japanese wife to teach our hapa daughter that “Sunrise, Sunset” was actually a song.

Maile loves the book and clearly Mommy has sung her the song a few times…

Future drama teachers, please accept this as Maile’s audition for the role of Tzeitel (and yes, I had to look that up!)

Boston Friends

by Maile Girl on July 21, 2011

Every time I go back to Boston I always have so much fun catching up with my east coast friends.

This time I met two new friends, Adam and Tyler. They are just babies so as a big two year old, I knew it was my job to take care of them. (Hint, hint, mommy and daddy – I can handle this big sister thing!) I sang some songs to Adam – I think he liked them…

On Sunday night, I saw my good friend Alex – her birthday is the week before mine, so we celebrated together with some pizza and a very special cake that Grandma Jill made just for me!

Pizza with Alex - she is so cool, I learn so much when I hang out with her...

Then on Monday, I went out to dinner with one of my oldest friends, Jordy – and we goofed around and just had so much fun.

I can’t wait to go back to Boston and see everyone again!
