On Sunday, Mommy and Grandma Jill took Maile to her first official ballet. We found a school called the Tutu School just down the street from us. Classes don’t start for a couple weeks, but this was a “test class” to see what Maile thought. I think it’s safe to say that we will be coming again…
This is going to come as a huge shock, but Mommy and Grandma Jill took a few videos during the class. Enjoy!
(* The asterisk in the title is because unofficially Maile’s first ballet class was last year with Auntie Elyssa 🙂

Maile Girl in her new ballerina tutu - she LOVES it!
Guess what? I’m starting ballet classes! How fun is that? I love dancing all around and while I think my moves are pretty great, Mommy and Daddy said that there are teachers that can help me learn even more. I like my teachers at school, so I figure a teacher who teaches dance must be pretty awesome as well!
I thought just taking ballet classes was going to be enough, but Mommy said that I get a special outfit to wear. And let me tell you – the outfit is soooo pretty! Since Grandma and Papa Boston were in town they took me to a special store to pick out my ballerina outfit. Grandma says she was in heaven. There was a lady at the store who helped us out – I got to pick out my very own tutu, some pink tights and special shoes. Mommy says I can only wear the shoes in our house when I practice or at my ballet lessons – I can’t wear them outside. BUT she did let me wear my tutu outside AND she even said I could sleep in it. I might never take it off.
Thank you Grandma Jill (and Papa Mike) for my very first ballerina tutu. It’s purple and pretty and perfect. I love it.

Grandma Jill and Papa Mike are coming this weekend and Maile Girl is very, very excited! Last weekend, every time we mentioned the trip she’d get all excited and then start asking if they were coming in “5 minutes” or “after nap” – so we made a calendar on her chalkboard and every day after school she gets to cross off a square and count how many are left. Great success!

Maile had music class at school today and learned a new song about peanut butter and jelly. She taught it to Mommy tonight – apparently this whole back and forth went on for quite awhile and Christine managed to capture a bit of it on video.

Meet Maile’s new pet, appropriately named “dog” (apparently 3 is a literal phase).
Dad note: Those who know me well, will find it funny that even mechanical dogs apparently like to sit at my feet.

Last year, it took a little work for Maile Girl to wish Grandma Jill a proper happy birthday…
This year, I could barely get the camera on before she started singing!
This is indeed a welcome improvement!

Some context behind the video below: Maile has definitely improved on the potty training front, but she’s not all the way there yet. She’s at the point now, where most of the time she tells someone when she needs to go potty. However, every once in awhile she gets in a mood where she is almost willing herself not to go.
That was the case today.
This video is the tail end of about a 30 minute back-and-forth between Maile and I at the museum. She was running around, crossing her legs, acting just like a little girl who needed to go the bathroom – except she absolutely insisted she didn’t need to go. At one point I even picked her up and carried her into the bathroom and begged her to sit on the potty “for a minute” – to which she went absolutely bonkers and refused to go. That brings us to our video…
The good news is that sure enough after this video, we went into the bathroom and Maile went potty. She also preemptively told me two more times that afternoon. So we’re making some progress!

Maile has liked typing on her keyboard for awhile, but it’s mostly just nonsense letters. The other day she completely surprised me by typing out her first real words!
She’s been able to spell her name for awhile, can point out letters and has even started writing her name. I had no idea she could type it though. Daddy was a happy camper – now to teach her some real programming so I can put her to work!

On Sunday we celebrated Maile’s birthday at a local park with all her friends. Mommy found a great face painter, Oliver, and Maile was VERY pleased that she got to go first! Maile also had a blast running around the playground with her friends and getting her pick of the cupcakes…

Before all the friends arrived, Daddy taught Maile some Karate Kid moves...
Like this, Daddy?

Hi Oliver, my name is Maile, it's my birthday, I'm 3, and Mommy said I get to go first. Cool?
I can't wait to see what my face looks like!
Look how pretty! (Dad note: Maile had a tumble the day before her party - hence the scraped up knows and forehead. I'm told that's a classic Daddy move 😉
Getting ready to make a birthday wish!
As you’ll see in the video, Maile was a bit overwhelmed by all the attention – but she had a great birthday party. Thanks to all of her friends that helped her celebrate!
