It’s been a long week on the home front. Maile has been home from school all week, but today she finally started feeling better. The hardest part has definitely been staying away from Lauren, but we loosened the reigns a little bit today as she’s been fever free… and that lead to this exchange – which was awesome 🙂

Just chatting with Grandma Gail

by Papa K on February 13, 2013

Maile Girl has been home from school sick the past couple of days. A bit of a cough and fever – we actually don’t think it’s the flu luckily, but still poor girl hasn’t been feeling well. She has her moments where she just is lethargic on the couch, but other times, you’d think she was pulling a Ferris Bueller on us. For example, yesterday morning she decided to call up Grandma Gail and have a chat…

Maile, Tummy Time Personal Trainer

by Papa K on February 10, 2013

I think this video really captures how Maile interacts with Lauren these days. The first couple of weeks, she was kind of shy around Lauren. Don’t get me wrong, she loved holding her, but she didn’t really talk to her. Now, that’s all changed. Maile is constantly talking and singing to Lauren. She tells her stories, she mimics the things that Mommy and Daddy say, she encourages her, she asks her what’s wrong when she cries (and then quickly reports to us). It’s just awesome watching their relationship really starting to blossom.

And for her part, Lauren has been rocking it on the tummy time front – no doubt because she wants to impress her big sister!

Today was my 35th birthday and Christine and the girls made it a great celebration from start to finish!

(Thank you to Christine for wrangling the girls and giving me an awesome birthday celebration! I’m a lucky guy indeed … although not quite as old as Maile things I am 😉

Give Me a “M”…

by Papa K on February 3, 2013

Maile is big into her letters and spelling these days – and her interest extends beyond pen and paper 😉

I know a song about toes…

by Papa K on January 22, 2013

The first week or so, Maile was clearly in love with her little sister, but she didn’t quite know what to do with her. She liked to hug her and hold her a bit and was always giving her kisses, but interestingly, she didn’t talk to her a lot. She was very shy around her. We encouraged her to talk to Lauren and tell her what she was doing and about her day, etc. This week she really started to do it – as the video below demonstrates. I think we’ve now created a monster 😉

Listen Close…

by Papa K on January 17, 2013

You’ll have to listen close, but if you can hear it, this might be the sweetest sound in the world. Baby Lauren does this cute little whimper when she sleeps on you and it melts my heart every time she does it.

Up Close with Lauren

by Papa K on January 14, 2013

This video makes me laugh – I get the feeling that Lauren is just testing out how her face works … or pooping her diaper. One or the other 😉

Big Girl, Little Gear

by Papa K on January 10, 2013

It used to be that Maile had the run of the place – pretty much everything at the apartment was for her. Now there is all this stuff for Lauren and it can get confusing sometimes…

(You used to love it, Maile Girl!)

You're never too old to be swaddled.

We call them the Swaddled Sisters:

(Dad note: It’s really weird – all of a sudden it feels like Maile got MUCH older and has basically doubled in weight. I don’t expect her to weigh the same as Lauren, of course, but whenever we pick her up now she feels so heavy. Very strange!)

Meeting My New Sister

by Maile Girl on January 6, 2013

Maile Girl here. I know Daddy told you about my new sister, Lauren, yesterday – but I wanted to chime in with some of my own thoughts…

On Thursday, Mommy and Daddy told me that they were going to go back to San Francisco to have the doctors check out Lauren. They didn’t tell me she was definitely coming, but I had a feeling. I didn’t mind too much, I got to play with Grandma and Papa. On Friday, we took an airplane back to San Francisco and Daddy met us at the airport. He asked me if I wanted to meet my new sister. I said, “YES!” (of course) – sometimes Daddy asks me silly questions.

We drove over to the hospital and sure enough when I walked into the room there was Mommy and a little baby. My new sister! I didn’t even know her name yet, but as soon as I saw her, I knew I loved her. She was so tiny. It’s a good thing she has a big sister like me to look out for her. Mommy let me hold her right away. She was a little heavy, but I did okay. I’ve held her a bunch of times since – I like holding her. She is pretty much the most cuddly doll ever. But she’s real. Sometimes she yells – at first it scared me a little, but now I’m kind of used to it.

(Dad note: this video was taken a couple minutes after Maile first met Lauren and is the first time she heard her new sister’s name!)

The doctor came in to do an exam while I was there. I watched her like a hawk - I'm very protective of my little sister.

Love.

(Dad note: We came home from the hospital today. Everyone is doing great. As evidenced above, Maile absolutely adores her little sister. She’s adjusting pretty well to having a fourth member of the family around. A few tears here or there and definitely some vying for Mommy’s attention, but all in all, she’s been great. Maile Girl is going to be a great big sister!)
