Chatterboxes

by Papa K on August 20, 2013

Ultimately, I’m guessing communication will go smoother if Maile gets Lauren up to her “level” of talking vs. playing down to Lauren’s. But perhaps Maile has a plan here to establish some common ground first. We shall see…

Hopscotch with Maile Girl

by Papa K on August 15, 2013

This is a flashback video from when we were in Boston last week. Maile and I walked down to Stanley School (a short walk from Grandma and Papa’s and where I went to elementary school) and had a lot of fun playing on the playground. I showed Maile how to play hopscotch and then she took matters in to her own hands and came up with rules to share with me about how they play the game “in China.” Yes, I get taught new rules from China for games I thought I knew how to play all the time 🙂

Learning Cups

by Papa K on August 12, 2013

Mommy is a big fan of Pitch Perfect these days and she and Maile have been signing along to the “Cups” song whenever it comes on the radio in the car. So on Saturday, Maile and Mommy decided to try to learn the “cups” clapping part of the song.

They don’t quite have it yet, but they are working on it. We’ll check back in once they nail it 🙂

My sister is … funny.

by Lil' Lauren on August 11, 2013

I haven’t quite figured out my big sister, Maile, yet. But I’m working on it…

(Dad note: The end of this video cracks me up. Maile is doing her best to get Lauren to laugh and Lauren is just looking at her like she is the strangest thing she has ever come across. Which is actually probably true…)

Maile Girl on Camera

by Papa K on August 8, 2013

Maile and I flew back from Boston on Tuesday. She came with me to work for about an hour before Mommy was ready to take her home. It was an exciting day at Pocket HQ as we had a film crew in house filming some things. They had setup one of our rooms with all these cameras, a green screen, etc. Maile got to check everything out from the make-up girl to the cameras. The crew was awesome – even showed her what she looked like on camera. I think she got a kick out of it – although for as talkative as she is normally, she wasn’t very forthcoming when interviewed on camera 😉

Daddy, is your work like this every day?

Mommy and Daddy have been a bit passive in teaching Lauren how to crawl. I’m tired of waiting around, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I’m really, really excited for her to start moving. I’m thinking a few more lessons and she’ll be ready to rock on her own…

(Dad note: No Laurens were hurt in the filming of this video. Yet.)

Moves Like … Daddy?

by Papa K on July 29, 2013

Maile put on a dance show this weekend and Christine and I noticed that she might be paying attention to some of Daddy’s moves and co-opting them into her routine. This makes me happy and I imagine for a short time will make her cooler than ice cold, but I also have a feeling that the time horizon for being cool while “incorporating Daddy’s moves” is quite short. Maile Girl, I apologize in advance.

Just like her sister, Lauren LOVES bananas! So much so that she licks her high chair clean 🙂

A long time ago (when she was only 8 months old!), we started swim classes with Maile at the JCC. They were Mommy/Daddy and me-type classes where we were in the water with her. While the first couple of times went okay, it became clear very quickly that Maile wasn’t a big fan. We did it for a few months and then bailed on it.

Since then Maile has had some exposure to the water here in San Francisco and on our trips to Hawaii (and Boston and Chicago too). In fact, our last visits to Hawaii and Chicago made us realize that she might be ready again for swim lessons – she just loved being in the water.

We heard from one of Maile’s classmates about this great swimming program called La Petite Baleen. The classes are limited to 4 children only who are in the pool alone the teacher and the family raved about how great the teachers are with the kids. We decided to check it out last weekend and we were not disappointed. Part of it might be because Maile was the right age to get back into swim lessons, but she had a blast and I was really impressed with the whole setup of the program. We signed up for weekly classes and I have a feeling Maile is going to be quite the fish by the time we get back to Hawaii in December!

They use lots of floaties and toys to get the kids comfortable in the water - but they also teach them tricks like making a 'balloon face' so they don't swallow water when they put their face in.
