A couple weeks ago we had a parent teacher conference for Maile. One of the things her teacher, Ruth, was most impressed about was how Maile’s Mandarin is really progressing this year. We’ve noticed it too, but obviously a bit harder for us since we don’t speak the language. With that said, we’ve seen her develop from individual words to full sentences and being able to express herself. It’s been really cool to watch … and even better, she can often explain to us what she is saying.
At the parent teacher conference, Ruth showed us a video from back in October when Maile got back from Auntie Elyssa and Uncle Stephen’s wedding. You can see it below – basically she is doing a show and tell to the class telling them all about the wedding … in Mandarin. My understanding is that she first is telling them that she actually had 2(!) dresses, one purple and one pink that she got to wear. That there were two parties she went to and then she goes on to tell them that I gave a speech and Grandma and Papa too.
Pretty awesome – I also thought it was cool how seamlessly she moved from Mandarin to English when she didn’t know a word (like “wedding”)…

The holiday season is really heating up in our house. We rocked it through Hanukkah and now Maile is working her way through her Lego Advent Calendar while Ellie the Elf watches from her shelf, getting more and more excited for Christmas every day! Lauren isn’t sure what to think, except that she isn’t really pleased when Maile uses her as a prop (see video below for the details)…

Lauren Girl here.
Word on the street is that my daddy is spreading false rumors that all I can do is kneel/crawl these days. I’m here to set the record straight:
That’s right – no kneeling to be seen – just straight walking with my walker. Boo yah!

I know you’re waiting for the walking video of Lauren Girl. She’s not there yet, but she has this kneeling shuffle down pat!

Last week we had a bout with a mean little 24 hour bug that took our family down one-by-one.
Lauren was the first casualty.
Lauren was patient zero in our house on this one... poor little girl.
Then she got all better and handed off to Mommy.
We were thrilled when Lauren got better so quickly ... until Mommy got knocked out.
Then Maile Girl got it. Poor Maile Girl – first time throwing up and she was NOT a fan. In the morning after getting sick she told Mommy “It was a bad night of my life.”
And then at the end after watching my girls go down, I got it. What a way to go – just absolute foreboding knowing it was going to hit me and nothing I could do about it.
At least it was only 24 hours – in the grand scheme, not too bad at all – but a “bad week of our lives” for sure 🙂

On Sunday, Mommy and Maile made marshmellows from scratch! – making them was fun, BUT eating the leftovers was definitely more fun.
What a mess!
(Dad note: The finished product came out really yummy … but those who know me well, know that this sort of mess is kind of my nightmare 😉

Maile needs a bit more room to air it out I think … and by the looks of it, Lauren isn’t that far behind!
(As it turns out, we are indeed moving – staying here in San Francisco, but moving to a new apartment. More to come in a future post…)

Maile on the guitar, Lauren is either the lead singer or hype girl – or maybe percussions? Not quite sure. Good thing they are practicing 😉

Lauren and Mommy are in NYC this week and Maile and I are missing them terribly. Between school and work and early bed times for Lauren, the time difference makes FaceTime tough, but we send each other video messages back and forth (like the one below). I don’t even mind that Lauren is actually all excited because she is looking at herself on the phone – she’s just too adorable and I can’t wait to see her tomorrow!

Maile joined a new ballet class (slightly older kids) on Sunday. Along with the class, came a new element – the barre. I managed to capture Maile’s very first experience with it on video – she did a pretty good job and was VERY excited – her real life is becoming more and more Angelina Ballerina-like every day 🙂
