Many of our good friends have had success watching Star Wars with their little ones. I’ve been dying to watch it with Maile, but given that Doc McStuffins still scares her sometimes, I had my doubts.
The past couple of weeks I’ve started telling her about Princess Leia (with a stress on PRINCESS) and a bit about the different characters. On Saturday, it was time to give it a real shot. I decided to start with Episode IV (the original Star Wars).
Maile and I settle in for her first Star Wars viewing - complete with popsicle bribe.
Things did not start well – Maile basically said she was all set with Star Wars about 5 minutes in when Darth Vadar uses the Force to choke one of the pilots.
… but then a funny thing happened. I let Maile go color and I continued watching. And I noticed slowly but surely, she itched her way back over to watch. And then she started asking questions about R2D2 and C3PO. And who was Obi-Wan? And where were they going in the car? I had her! We watched the first 45 minutes, ending as Luke, Obi-Wan and the droids arrive in Mos Eisley.
“Daddy, is Luke going to help Princess Leia?”
Another fan is born!

Mommy and Lauren had a girls day on Monday and Christine decided to teach Lauren how to paint. She captured 15-20 second segments of the exercise and I put them together in a longer video.
My favorite part is when Lauren is wiggling her tongue, dying to eat the paint brush again … followed by a cut to Mommy resorting to finger painting with Lauren. Lauren, like her sister before her, is very lucky to have an artistic guide like their Mommy!

The antibiotics kicked in last night and we had an after dinner dance party. Papa Mike thoroughly enjoyed the show and caught this great video. Maile started liking this Miley Cyrus, Party in the USA song a little while ago. When I told her the singer’s name was “Miley” – well then, she really started liking it. We have not really moved on to Miley’s more recent works…
Yeah, we’re feeling better.

Christine captured this video of Lauren playing with a toy blender and seemingly testing her various toys with it. It completely reminded me of those Youtube Will It Blend? series.
Will it blend a dollie?
Will it blend a shoe?
Will it blend a book?
Lauren knows the answer!

The Blue Angels were in town this weekend and it was the first time Lauren got to see them (they didn’t come last year during Fleet Week). We had a decent view from our apartment (we’re on the 10th floor on top of a hill) and Lauren was fascinated scanning the sky looking for the plans. She’d hear the noise and then look all over until she found them. Then when they disappeared she’d say, “Where’d they go?” – it was fantastic.

This week’s #tbt comes from 2011 – a video of Maile doing Mommy’s hair – something she still LOVES doing today…
And from more recently…
The braids have gotten a bit more complex over the past 3 years...

This is Christine’s new favorite video of the girls.
Apparently, Maile was sitting on the chair with this Where’s Waldo-style book and Lauren climbed up next to her and started combing her hair and “helping” her.
Love.

Soccer season is upon us and once again I’m coaching Maile’s soccer team, the U6 PKS Pandas. We had our second game this past Saturday. I’ve been really impressed with the difference in Maile and all the kids since last spring. The level of play has really increased – a lot more coordination, some sustained back-and-forths and much less of a situation where one really good player dominates the whole game (although there certainly are some kids that are clearly ahead of the pack).
Maile scored her first goal of the season on Saturday. It’s hard for me to take pictures since I’m on the field coaching, but I took this video before everyone arrived that gives a good feel for how much Maile has improved…

We’ve been doing a lot of dancing lately after dinner. Sometimes we dance with the girls and sometimes they just like to put on a show and have us watch. Lauren is basically Maile’s “hype man” – Maile does her moves and Lauren orbits around her. It’s awesome.
