Last week Grandma and Papa went and checked out Maile’s Hip Hop class and took some video. The dancing is fun as always, but mainly I’m just excited that Rusted Root is still in the rotation 🙂

Mommy and Maile headed to the ballet on Sunday afternoon, which left Lauren and I to ourselves. We’d tell you what we did all afternoon, but it’s a secret…

For the past couple of weeks, Maile has been a little girl on a mission. The mission being learning how to whistle. We’d catch her throughout the day trying again and again to make a sound through her mouth. We’d see her looking at herself in the mirror. She’d come over and ask us if we heard anything (and demand we listen harder when we told her we couldn’t).
And then, it suddenly, all came together…
We were quite proud of Maile Girl – only slightly less proud than she was of herself I believe 😉

Saturday was my birthday and I had a wonderful day celebrating with the girls. Mommy coordinated the whole thing from morning cards and signs to afternoon cake and then a fun evening out on the town. A perfect balance of fun with the little ladies and then a night out with Mommy and friends.
Here are some highlights…
Mommy made the cake, but the sprinkles were all Maile and Lauren
Wait, we have to wait for Daddy before we can eat this?
Lauren loved the cake; Maile not so much - not a fan of chocolate...
The benefit of waking up at 5:30 AM is there is plenty of time to write the perfect card for Daddy (since Mommy let him sleep in)
Maile's top secret birthday sign - perfect!
But the best part was definitely the singing of Happy Birthday, where Lauren just assumed you always use her name 🙂

Lauren and her partner in crime, Elena, bring the Uptown Funk to get the weekend started…

What were you doing this morning 6:50 AM this morning? Were you doing the French Fry Dance? Because we were.

Last year for the first time, Maile’s school participated in the Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco. The kids got on TV and everything!
This year Maile said she wanted to join in on the fun. For the past couple of weeks she and her friends practice for the parade on Tuesday afternoons. And last week, we picked up her costume…
Maile in her adorable Ram costume - can't wait to see her in action!
And here is a sneak peak of their routine (Maile is in the white shirt right in the middle)…
I have no doubt my girls love me, but they are momma’s girls true and true. Exhibit A in our evidence from January 22, 2012:

When we were in Hawaii, Katie and Emily worked on some homework assignments – basically some worksheets. Maile was fascinated.
A couple days ago, she sat down and used Google to make her own English/Mandarin worksheet that was modeled after what Katie and Emily had in Japanese (yeah, a lot of languages in that sentence!). Basically, she asked Google how to say certain words (like “Mommy”) in Chinese and then drew a picture and wrote both the characters and the word down.

The next day, she asked me if I could find her some worksheets that she could use. We hit Google again (our new best friend) and I printed out some that I found. Today I asked her teachers at school for some help and they pointed me towards some good sites. Maile loves working through the problems (mostly math at this point) and then I help grade them – complete with a teacher-style smiley face at the top 🙂
She has a cute folder that she places all her assignments in and she’s been bringing them to school (unclear what happens with them at that point). So far we love homework!

On Saturday, Lauren and I had the afternoon to ourselves while Mommy and Maile were off at a movie. We went for a long walk, took a long nap and then stumbled on this game that we ended up playing for about 30 minutes. It basically consisted of one of us hiding, counting to three, then jumping up, saying “Woo!” and running to the other person. Then it was the other persons turn.
Did I mentioned we did this for 30 minutes? It was actually a pretty good workout for Daddy 😉 And as the video shows, Lauren is a very demanding play date.
