February 2013

It’s been a long week on the home front. Maile has been home from school all week, but today she finally started feeling better. The hardest part has definitely been staying away from Lauren, but we loosened the reigns a little bit today as she’s been fever free… and that lead to this exchange – which was awesome 🙂

Just chatting with Grandma Gail

by Papa K on February 13, 2013

Maile Girl has been home from school sick the past couple of days. A bit of a cough and fever – we actually don’t think it’s the flu luckily, but still poor girl hasn’t been feeling well. She has her moments where she just is lethargic on the couch, but other times, you’d think she was pulling a Ferris Bueller on us. For example, yesterday morning she decided to call up Grandma Gail and have a chat…

Hair Roots

by Papa K on February 12, 2013

Whenever people first see Lauren, the first thing they always comment on is her hair. She (a) has a lot of it and (b) it’s a dark brown, much darker (we think) than Maile’s ever was.

Look at all that hair!

Look at all that hair!

Grandma Gail and Papa Cal did some digging and we believe we found the source of Lauren’s beautiful hair…

A little hard to see, but it does appear to be a little baby with lots of hair...

Hmmm... who is this mysterious baby with Lauren-looking locks?!?

The photos are a little small… but that little baby is … Papa Cal! And he’s still rocking that hair today (albeit a slightly different color) – so Lauren is working with some strong hair genes!

Maile, Tummy Time Personal Trainer

by Papa K on February 10, 2013

I think this video really captures how Maile interacts with Lauren these days. The first couple of weeks, she was kind of shy around Lauren. Don’t get me wrong, she loved holding her, but she didn’t really talk to her. Now, that’s all changed. Maile is constantly talking and singing to Lauren. She tells her stories, she mimics the things that Mommy and Daddy say, she encourages her, she asks her what’s wrong when she cries (and then quickly reports to us). It’s just awesome watching their relationship really starting to blossom.

And for her part, Lauren has been rocking it on the tummy time front – no doubt because she wants to impress her big sister!

Super Bowl with Hannah and Jake

by Papa K on February 6, 2013

We headed down to Hannah’s house for the Super Bowl and while the outcome wasn’t what we had hoped for, we still had a blast watching the game.

Before the game, Maile set to work creating a Go 49ers sign!

It's always fun to see Maile and Hannah together - even though they don't see each other as frequently, they still have a special bond...

Celebrating Chinese New Year

by Papa K on February 5, 2013

Last Friday, we joined Maile and her classmates at the Presidio Knolls Chinese New Year Celebration. It’s the one time in the year when the whole school gets together – and with 130+ students now, it’s quite a crowd.

This year for the first time, each class of students performed a Chinese New Year song on stage. Maile’s first school performance! The kids had been practicing for a couple weeks and the teachers made sure we helped prepare them to go up on stage my themselves. (We started a few days before the event, telling Maile how excited we were to see her on stage and that we would be sitting in the audience and she would go with her teachers.) Either the prep worked or we had nothing to worry about, because Maile girl showed no signs of stage fright!

All the classes did a great job, but, of course, we were partial to Maile and her Ginkgo classmates 🙂

I'd tell you the name of the song they sang ... but it was in Chinese ;)

1 Month Old!

by Papa K on February 4, 2013

Hard to believe that it’s already been a month – time certainly does fly! (But on the flip side it is already hard to remember life without you.)

Lauren is doing great. As Christine observed this morning, she appears thus far to subscribe to Daddy’s sleep schedule compared to Mommy’s (and Maile’s). That means she doesn’t like going to bed at night, but has no problem sleeping in. Bedtime has definitely been the biggest challenge so far – Lauren is ready to go (and cry) from 10 PM until 12:30 or so. But once she is down, she is actually doing a decide job of staying asleep for decent stretches at a time … and she has no problem sleeping in with Daddy (when he’s lucky!).

We haven’t been to the doctor in a few weeks, but she is definitely getting bigger and eating well. Her eyes are open more and more and she’s looking around and probably wondering why her sister is constantly kissing her.

Maile is adjusting well – she adores her sister and is always ready to hold her and help out. We’ve been doing a decent job dividing the attention between the girls, but Maile isn’t afraid to let us know if things go off balance a bit 😉

Give Me a “M”…

by Papa K on February 3, 2013

Maile is big into her letters and spelling these days – and her interest extends beyond pen and paper 😉
