Last year for the first time, Maile’s school participated in the Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco. The kids got on TV and everything!

This year Maile said she wanted to join in on the fun. For the past couple of weeks she and her friends practice for the parade on Tuesday afternoons. And last week, we picked up her costume…

Donut Chefs

by Papa K on January 27, 2015

We went to our friend Cordelia’s birthday party on Saturday and they had this fun donut decorating activity. If (when?) Dunkin’ Donuts ever comes to the Bay Area sign these girls up!

Nursemaid’s Elbow

That's a very sad little girl, but she just had her elbow popped back into place and is on her way to recovery...

Saturday night we made an expected stop after dinner to the emergency room. A normal walk across the parking lot to our car quickly became something else when Mommy went one way with Lauren’s arm and Lauren went the other. It was a movement we’ve both probably done a thousand times, but this time, it caused her little elbow to pop out of place.

We knew something was wrong right away – Lauren was pretty upset. It wasn’t the worse scream I’ve ever heard from one of the kids (that would below to Maile when she faceplanted on the stairs at our old apartment and her mouth gushed blood)… but we knew something was wrong when it didn’t stop. Every time she moved her little arm she shrieked out a bit and it mostly was lying limp by her side.

It just so happens that a friend was telling us about this happening to his daughter just the night before … so part of me was thinking I was reading too much into it at first, but we decided to head to the ER anyways.

After a short wait (and a little Frozen for distraction), the doctor saw us and sure enough diagnosed “nursemaid’s elbow” and was able to pop things back into place pretty easily. As soon as it went back, Lauren was back to normal (tired, but back to normal)!

First Homework for Maile Girl

by Papa K on January 21, 2015

When we were in Hawaii, Katie and Emily worked on some homework assignments – basically some worksheets. Maile was fascinated.

A couple days ago, she sat down and used Google to make her own English/Mandarin worksheet that was modeled after what Katie and Emily had in Japanese (yeah, a lot of languages in that sentence!). Basically, she asked Google how to say certain words (like “Mommy”) in Chinese and then drew a picture and wrote both the characters and the word down.

The next day, she asked me if I could find her some worksheets that she could use. We hit Google again (our new best friend) and I printed out some that I found. Today I asked her teachers at school for some help and they pointed me towards some good sites. Maile loves working through the problems (mostly math at this point) and then I help grade them – complete with a teacher-style smiley face at the top 🙂

She has a cute folder that she places all her assignments in and she’s been bringing them to school (unclear what happens with them at that point). So far we love homework!

Definition of Curiosity

Backstory – we hit up the Cal Academy of Sciences on Sunday and while in the rain forest area, this butterfly was just hanging out on the ground while a gaggle of kids inched closer and closer and closer.

With no school and no work on MLK Day, Mommy planned a fun adventure for her and the girls. She found a pretty cool tour at Mrs. Grossman’s sticker factory (some of you may remember that brand of stickers from when you were kids). The sticker factory was up in Petaluma, so first things first, the girls headed out for a special brunch (which Maile told me when I got home is halfway between breakfast and lunch!)…

After the brunch, they headed to the factory. They had a fun time learning about stickers and checking out all the different kinds that Mrs. Grossman’s makes. And, of course, they were very excited to bring some home with them (although I’m not sure how many of Lauren’s actually made it home – from the looks of it, most of them ended up on her body!)

On Saturday, Lauren and I had the afternoon to ourselves while Mommy and Maile were off at a movie. We went for a long walk, took a long nap and then stumbled on this game that we ended up playing for about 30 minutes. It basically consisted of one of us hiding, counting to three, then jumping up, saying “Woo!” and running to the other person. Then it was the other persons turn.

Did I mentioned we did this for 30 minutes? It was actually a pretty good workout for Daddy 😉 And as the video shows, Lauren is a very demanding play date.
