Maile’s 5th Birthday Party

by Papa K on July 14, 2014

Per Maile’s request, we had her birthday party at Pump It Up – the mecca of bouncy houses. The party was a great success with the kids (and some of the parents) all running themselves ragged followed by pizza and birthday cake. Some highlights below…

(We got this idea from friends of ours, Angie and Gabe. They came up with a list of questions that they started asking their son when he turned 3 years old. They ask him the same questions every year and see how the answers change.)

A year ago, Christine and I downloaded the Everyday app on our phones. Christine took Lauren and I took Maile. While we didn’t quite do it everyday, we each took pictures of the girls throughout the past year. Maile aging from 4 years old to 5 years old and Lauren aging from 6 months to 1.5 years old.

The compilations are great – you really see how the girls have changed physically over the past year (especially Lauren!)

Here’s Maile:

If you are reading this on the Hapa Haole blog web site, there is a list of months over on the right side of the page. It starts with this month (July 2014) and goes all the way down to July 2009. 5 years. If you haven’t done it in awhile, click on a random month in there – my guess is you’ll get lost for a bit in the stories this little girl (and, of course, her sister) have brought to life. Some nights Christine will call me over and she’ll have a video from two or three years ago up – we’ll watch and remember and laugh.

It does seem like every day Maile grows up faster and faster. Christine and I try to keep up – give her some nudges to stay on the track we think makes sense, but for the most part get out of the way and see where she takes us. She awes us constantly (and if we’re being honest, drives us a little batty more and more) – but it really is incredible to watch this person form, to figure things out, to get excited, to get scared, to get sad, to get mad, to learn, to develop passions, to dance, to sing, to smile and, especially, laugh.

Wow, indeed.

Stairs, Grass, Oh My!

by Lil' Lauren on July 7, 2014

Lauren Girl here! It’s been awhile since I’ve written, but I had quite the adventure this weekend. For the holiday, Mommy and Daddy said we were going to “get out of the city” to some place called Sonoma. It didn’t mean much to me, but Maile seemed excited, so I was excited too.

This place was VERY different from home. Not elevators. And right outside the ground was green instead of gray! Yes, they had grass! RIGHT OUTSIDE THE DOOR!

I can get used to this country life for sure…

Chillin'

Chillin'

(Dad note: We rented a house up in Kenwood, CA right outside of Glen Ellen. It was great to get away for a few days. We actually didn’t take many pictures at all – just took the time to unwind, relax and have some fun in the sun with the girls!)

Maile’s 5th(!) birthday is on Friday. Crazy. This afternoon I thought it would be fun to do some Daddy/daughter shopping and I took her to buy a “special birthday dress” that she could pick out.

We took the bus downtown and went to the Gap. Now Maile’s shopping style currently is “see it, want it” – everything is immediately her favorite. So I decided to teach her a little bit about how to make a decision. We went around the store and picked out all the dresses we liked and then we asked the lady working there if we could have a dressing room. We went into the dressing room and put all the dresses up on the hangers so we could check them out.

Then we tried them on one-by-one, checked ourselves out in the mirror and then decided if it went in the “I like it/maybe” pile or the “I don’t like it/get it off me quickly” pile. (Only one dress end up in the latter pile and that was because Daddy grabbed the wrong size).

Here’s the lineup:

Option #1 (a little timid to start)

Option #2 (now we're really getting in to it)

Option #3 (I swear I was not encouraging these poses!)

Option #4 (We loved this one as soon as we put it on...)

Option #5 (Wrong size one - get it off me!)

Option #5 (Wrong size one - get it off me!)

As mentioned above, I have no idea where these poses came from – I wasn’t encouraging her – just suggested we take a picture so we can remember what the dress looked like. She also doesn’t get it from Mommy. She just started a new show, PAW Patrol, maybe it’s from that 😉

After we tried them all on, we left the dressing room and reviewed all the pictures. Which is your favorite? We decided on…

… #4 – our very special birthday dressy and it looks beautiful on Maile!

Maile was very excited about her pick - he wanted to wear it home, but I convinced her to save it for her birthday party on Saturday

At Maile’s camp (Steve & Kate’s) they have an animation studio where the kids can make stop motion animated movies. Afterwards the counselors upload it to an account and the parents get notified.

Today, we got the notification when we got home and we were all excited to watch the movie with Maile after camp. Maile said she made an ageless story about a group of kids:

They were walking around. They found a treasure box. Then they looked at it. They found treasure. And then they walked back home.

And without further ado, here is Maile’s first masterpiece…

Yes, it goes by quick 🙂 But if you slow down the frames its kind of cool. Spielberg here we come!

Bathtime Jokers

by Papa K on July 2, 2014

Here’s a 30 second clip from tonight’s bath…

This actually went on for more than 5 minutes during bathtime. Same thing every time. Squirt water. Giggles. Repeat.

For the past few days at dinner, I’ve been sitting next to Lauren. She eats her dinner and then when she is done, she stands up in her highchair, leans over and puts her dirty hands all over my shoulder. It gets my shirt all dirty. I was making a comment about it tonight when Maile piped up that she thought she could make me something to help.

(At summer camp Maile has been spending a lot of time in the fashion studio making pillows, backpacks and dresses. They’ve taught her how to sew a bit and how buttons work, etc.)

After dinner, Mommy and Maile disappeared into the bedroom for a bit and when they returned, Maile had a new fashion invention to show me!

They cut up an old shirt to cover one of my shoulders and then they sewed a button in the sleeve so I could close it around my arm. Genius!

Here’s Maile explaining the specifics…

And as Maile says in the video, if you have a good name for her invention let us know and you’ll get some sort of prize that allows you to sit wherever you want (that part wasn’t immediately clear 😉
