The Maile Sleep Effect

This might be the first post I do that doesn’t include a picture or video of Maile Girl. (Don’t worry she’ll be back tomorrow 😉 A couple months ago I bought a WakeMate device – its this bracelet you wear while you sleep that tracks your movements and uses that data to provide detailed info on how well (or poorly as is too often the case) you are sleeping. It’s been a pretty interesting experiment, especially with Maile Girl.

That point was drilled home last week. Christine went to New York and Washington, DC for work – her first trip of 2011. You can see what happened to my sleep in the graph above. Not only did I get less hours, but my “deep sleep” (the green at the bottom of the bar) went down as well. I think I need to get this bracelet on Christine to see if this is what Mommy’s sleep is like all the time! (My theory is that Christine’s sleep is probably a bit worse than mine, but the drop off we’re seeing here is more of a “single parent” effect: Chris definitely wakes up earlier than me, but I’ll sometimes get Maile in the middle of the night if necessary. This past week, I was doing both.)

Moral of the story: We survived the week, definitely a bit less rested, but Mommy came home today and we’re all VERY happy to see her!

Looking for some privacy

by Maile Girl on February 10, 2011

I love my Mommy and Daddy, but sometimes a girl just needs a little privacy. You know, to take care of some business. So lately I’ve been on the hunt for a good hiding place. Mommy and Daddy go into the room with the bathtub sometimes, but that just seems too obvious to me.

Under this table might work - I don't think anyone can see me...

... darn, busted! Daddy, do you mind?

(Dad note: Apparently, this is pretty common. Maile Girl doesn’t do it every time, but there’s a good chance that if we find her under the table, something is going down … literally.)

Bus Stakeout

by Papa K on February 9, 2011

Move over blueberries, Maile has a new favorite thing … buses! All of a sudden last week she became absolutely fascinated with buses. As soon as we walk outside now she starts saying “bus, bus, bus, bus” and whenever we see one, she gets all excited and then immediately starts saying “more, more, more” because she wants to see another one. She can’t get enough.

We went out to breakfast on Sunday at Ella’s – for those not in the know, located at the corner of California and Presidio, we’re talking PRIME bus location. There must be 3 or 4 different bus lines that run through the intersection. Our table was right at the window and Maile Girl couldn’t contain herself. As soon as Daddy polished off his breakfast, I took her outside and she squatted on the corner waiting for the buses to go by. There’s a pretty good chance she’d still be there saying “bus, bus, bus” if we didn’t make her come home…

(Dad note: Yes, the video title is an ode to Brick Tamland…)

Family Picture – 19 Months

by Papa K on February 8, 2011

We realized yesterday that it’s been awhile since we busted out our actual camera and took some family pictures. The iPhone is just so convenient we use that for almost everything these days. In any event, on our way out to dinner we took some pictures of the three of us.

Toasting My Daddy

by Maile Girl on February 7, 2011

Today was my Daddy’s birthday. I woke him up in the morning with a big kiss and then tonight Mommy and I took him out for a birthday dinner. (Mommy paid, I brought the cuteness.)

I wanted to do something special for my Daddy’s birthday, so I decided to bust out my newest trick for the occasion. I noticed that whenever Mommy and Daddy drink the red stuff they knock their glasses together first. Even though I was just drinking my regular old white milk, I decided to show them that I knew how to knock the glasses together too. My first toast!

(Dad note: In fairness, Maile did this for the first time over the weekend, but this was the first time we caught it on camera. Working on getting her to say “L’Chaim” but she is having trouble with the “ch”…)

Today we hosted our first annual Super Bowl party with the San Francisco crew and their little ones. Hannah, Allison and Jake (along with their respective parents) came over for the game. (We were going to have even more little ones, but Sophie and Vincent were under the weather – par for the course in SF these days with the flu bug going around…) The twist with our party was that it only lasted until half-time – after that everyone went home to go to bed. We’ll tell Maile in the morning that the “cheese” (her pick) won.

As you might imagine, it is getting harder and harder to snag a picture with everyone all at once!

The girls got a little bored with the game so we threw some cards on the table to see what would happen. They figured things out pretty quick… (be sure to keep an eye on Hannah and her sneaky move with the Ace…)

You might notice near the end of the video that Mommy teaches Maile the basics of Liar’s Poker. She took right to it after that:

A Message for Daddy

by Papa K on February 3, 2011

I’m a lucky guy, I get to say good night to Maile Girl in person almost every night. Every once in awhile, I miss the bed time call because I am working late or out with friends. Tonight I went down to Stanford to catch the Stanford/Arizona game (the good guys lost unfortunately). I missed Maile’s bed time, but my girls got together and sent me a message to let me know they were thinking of me. It put a smile on my face and I thought it would do the same for you at the end of your week…

Grocery Shopping, Maile-style

by Papa K on February 2, 2011

Trader Joe’s has these great mini shopping carts for kids. Takes a little longer to get through the store, but ridiculously cute. Pretty soon we’re just going to give Maile a shopping list and drop her off at the grocery store 😉

Hanging Hearts

by Papa K on February 1, 2011

Last week Megan and Maile started Valentine’s Day preparations. We’ve had a glimpse of what’s in store for us with the decorations currently covering our walls. On Sunday, Maile noticed an area of the living room wall that didn’t have any hearts. It was lonely and unloved – so we rectified the issue with some tape and extra paper hearts Megan had left us.
